Horse Therapy

1/6/2021

Picture

Karen Carr and her husband, owners of Broken Wing Ranch Ministry, offers a horse therapy to the women at Homestead. Though the ranch works mostly with young girls, teaching them leadership and responsibility and confidence, the Homestead women get to participate.

Karen’s horses are calm and gentle. Most of the Homesteaders have had little experience with horses. Karen patiently teaches them the basics. The women start by riding slowly around the interior of the pen. Horses feel everything that the rider feels. If they are anxious or angry or sad, the horse feels it and gives feedback. Trust develops between horse and rider and confidence grows.

Once the basics are down, Karen leads the horses in a line through her ranch property, through beautiful woods and pastures, crossing streams and up and down small hills. Each girl rides independently, guiding her horse, taking turns being in the lead. The ride outdoors offers fresh air, exercise, nature, mindfulness and stress relief.

During the hour to two hour ride, Karen rides up next to the participants, conversing and getting to know each one. She praises and encourages, pointing out skills and leadership qualities. Karen is a wonderful role model and mentor.

After the ride, the girls brush the horses, talking to and petting them. The horses respond to the girls affection, often nudging them with their noses and seeking attention. The girls develop a bond with the horse that is irreplaceable.

Over time through the experiences riding, the girls gain confidence, pride and accomplishment. They feel unconditional love and acceptance from the horses and from Karen. Occasionally, the house managers also get to join in.

Horse therapy is an effective and appreciated service Homestead is able
to provide.
